Haworthia smitii

This interesting Haworthia which seems to be somewhat intermediate between Haworthia kingiana and Haworthia tuberculata  has never been found in the wild since its first discovery. The site of origin is also somewhat of a mystery, with conflicting data. Although the type locality is believed to be in the Kammanassie area east of Oudtshoorn other data seems to refute this.

Certain forms of Haworthia starkiana from the Schoemanspoort are sometimes referred to as Haworthia smitii in error.

It does however appear to have been discovered in the Oudtshoorn district.

  1. Why "Haworthia smitii in error"? Is its true name then not "Haworthia smitii"?
