Astroloba spiralis - 'Elegans' Calitzdorp

Astroloba spiralis is very variable in the area around Calitzdorp.

I apply the cultivar name 'Elegans' to the thinly stemmed forms. Many of these have the leaves stacked tightly together while others have the leaves spreading more outwards.

Astroloba pentagona - Vleiland

The type locality of this species is given at Rouxpos. I shall add pics of these later. The plants are very similar to the ones at Vleiland though.

Also refered to as Astroloba halii n.n. (Reinecke). The latter name is not valid however and the description was never published

Astroloba foliolosa - Thin form Eastern Cape

A thin stemmed form from the Eastern Cape with no further data. Originally from the collection of Gerhard Marx.

Astroloba robusta - South of Anysberg area Laingsburg

Found on low outcroppings, in shale, between two mountain ranges. It shares habitat with Astroloba corrugata.  Astroloba smutsiana is found further south on the mountain pass.

I thought this population to be disjunct to others in the Great Karoo, but it is possible that it links up with the same species at Prince Albert.

In cultivation the plants flower in August, while the plants from Prince Albert flowered weeks before, with the seed already ripening.

Astroloba corrugata - Uitspan Gouritz River

Astroloba corrugata occurs in the Southern Cape from the Worcester district to west of the Gouritz River Between Van Wyksdorp and Oudtshoorn. It is also found north of the Swartberg Mountain
range.

Found in sparsely vegetated ferricrete stone areas.

General View of the Gourtiz River area where Astroloba corrugata occurs sporadically.
