Plant flowering in a garden in the Little Karoo.
Aloe dichotoma is closely related to Aloe ramosissima.
On the question of what soil to use the following: (Apologies I had to post the whole post again with reply below as there seems to have been a glitch.)
In general a well drained sandy or stony soil I prefer especially the top layer. We avoid compost, but other growers add compost. Mostly hot dry conditions are preferred, but I have seen them growing even in gardens in George southern Cape which has moderate temperatures and is quite humid. Good watering stimulates growth, but will also increase the chances of rot when the plants get older. Young plants can be watered quite regularly in hot summer weather. As they grow older I prefer the water them very seldom -imitating Northern Cape harsh conditions.
